Art of Life Presents: Emotions in Motion

Uppdate 16/11/2009: We sadly have to confirm that due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, the event has been cancelled.

Sincerest apologies,
The Art of Life Team

Following its recent success Art of Life is now hosting another exhibition featuring artists from the University of Arts London and The London College of Communication. Art of Life is showcasing at PROUD CENTRAL, a stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square. This is a one day event for up-and-coming art talent.

The concept of art creation challenges the spectator not only to view, but also to interact with the artistic process from the initial inspiration to the end result. The artists will also display finished work at the event.

Shiwei

www.shiweiart.com

Education: Shiwei is a student at London College of Communication and is studying for BA moving image and interaction degree.

Currently living in London, Shiwei was born in Taipei, in 1988, and raised in Paris. Her art is Influenced by Greek mythology, absurd literature, and Chinese composition.

The body is the main subject of her work, as a surface, a landscape and a medium of ex-pression and interaction with people and space. Shiwei uses a camera to capture and express an idea, but her work is more performance art than photography; each piece possesses a distinct physical dimension and strong, dark imagery that conveys deep meaning, offset by vibrant colors that bring out a beauty that might otherwise be missed.

Innocence, beauty, sexuality and violence are commonly explored and presented in a provo-cative, humorous and sometimes uncomfortable light. For Shiwei, to achieve an aesthetic is crucial, as it brings sensation to the viewer, and is an international language.

Alessandro Carboni

www.alessandrocarboni.it

Carboni consistently use materials as a means of communication throughout his practice, thereby transforming formal elements into conceptual indicators. The bright colours, extreme contrasts, emphasis on texture within the folds and scratches are key to conveying strength and emotional tension. Chalk, rags, stones from Ushuaia, sand from the Death Valley, a t-shirt from a homeless in New York, are examples of the materials that Carboni generally use in his paintings.

Carboni’s research, studies the interaction between the materials he generally uses and the human body. The result of this yearlong exploration is shown in his new Bodies series. There is no digital postproduction or retouching involved in Carboni’s work, all the pigmentation is done at the time of the shoot, directly on the model. Carboni is constantly researching new materials and new expressive forms to further develop his practice.

Biography

Swedish artist, Annett Reimer, born 1984 in Sweden. Moved to United Kingdom after completed one years photographic studies in Finland in 2005, to continue her studies at the University for the Creative Arts in Maidstone, from where she recently graduated with a first class joint honors degree.

Artist Statement

Reimer’s main practice addresses the relationship between body, place and memory. Throughout her imagery she makes use of a surrealistic language to explore femininity, sexuality and loss. The female body is fragmented and dismembered, fracturing the power of the photographic gaze. Reimer is inspired by the location of her photographic performance where she uses herself as the subject. The location of the work holds high importance as does the performance, the locations used is of high personal value. Reimer’s performances are quiet, yet powerful evocations of a hidden unknown.

Miranda Benzies

www.mirandasmantlepiece.com

What drives me to paint is the need to capture a subject matter that has had an effect on me. This effect can be good, bad, nostalgic or aesthetic. I do not feel restricted to recreate a style; the subject matter and style is chosen subconsciously and painting is the vehicle through which this is shown.

By painting subject matters that fascinate me I am translating what I see and feel to other people while remaining detached and true to subject. This is why I feel the representative element in my painting is fundamental; it reminds me, and allows the viewer insight into the idea/inspiration behind the piece.

I approach painting instinctively, the decision to paint a subject comes like a lightening bolt; a culmination of years of painting, drawing, studying other artists, my history degree, friends, family - life.

Anna Linderstam

Anna Linderstam is a Swedish artist, currently working and living in London. She studied at Lund University and at University of Photography in Gothenburg where she graduated 2005. She has also completed a postgraduate course at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, UK.

Linderstam works with staged portraits in constructed scenarios. Her imagery is highly controlled, both aesthetically and in the exacting conditions she imposes on her subjects. She explores the relation between time, submission and dominance within the performative space of photography and video. In a consciously cinematographic way, she contracts everything into densely atmospheric dramas, maintaining an ambiguity between the constructed situation and the authentic physical exertion of the subject.

Her work has been exhibited in a number of museums and galleries in Scandinavia and the UK. In 2008 Linderstam exhibited at National Gallery, Hillerød, Denmark, Liljevalchs konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden, Amos Andersons Artmuseum, Helsinki, Finland, Ljungbergmuseum, Ljungby, Sweden, Hasselblad Center, Gothenburg, Sweden, Norsk Folkemuseum, Oslo, Norway.

Linderstam has received numerous fellowships and grants and she was the winner of the New Nordic Photography, awarded by the Hasselblad Foundation in 2007.
